About the features of tourism “in Chinese”
With the advent of the middle class in China, an increasing number of tourists began to be observed throughout the world. In the statistical data all over the world (and in Russia too), tourists from the PRC began to lead in the “arrival” line, displacing tourists from Germany from there.Travel companies and generally interested in the development of tourism “hosts” are pleased with the increase in tourist traffic from China, but at the same time they recognize the presence of specificity in the concept of “Chinese tourist”.
On the peculiarities of tourism “in Chinese”
Planes and trains, train stations, airports and especially hotels are constantly faced with problems caused by the reception features of Chinese tourists. Hotels are often simply not ready to receive guests from the Middle Kingdom and, after their stay, bear the additional costs of updating the rooms, and again and again carry out cosmetic repairs.
Those of the hoteliers who consciously take risks and invite Chinese groups, try to minimize their risks and create comfortable conditions for their stay, taking into account the specifics of this category of tourists. For example, they provide separate rooms for eating, specially prepare dishes of Chinese cuisine. This was told to journalists by the deputy general director of the company “Academservice” Alexander Kurnosov.
As an example, Alexander Kurnosov referred to the experience of Petersburg tour operators who are trying to plan tours and excursions so that they, if possible, do not overlap with Chinese groups. Otherwise, their tourists, most likely, will not be able to photograph anything and even see.
Tour operators in Europe also practice this approach, and sometimes go even further. In Switzerland, in the picturesque Alpine resort of Mount Rigi, in the near future, special trains will begin to run, the passengers of which will be exclusively tourists from China.

Such an ambiguous course was taken as a reaction to the numerous claims of other passengers of the trains, they are shocked by the noisy and rude behavior of tourists from the PRC. In September, 20 “Chinese trains” will start plying on mountain routes already in September, and they will contain the rules for using traveling toilets and other wagon service items that will be printed in Chinese. According to the Swiss press, resort authorities expect in this way to defuse tensions that often arise in relations between Chinese tourists and travelers from other countries, as well as locals. At the same time, it is emphasized in the press, in no case will they deprive the Chinese of the opportunity to travel around the Alps in ordinary trains.
Chinese tourists make claims because of blocking corridors in trains, as a result of which other passengers are deprived of the opportunity to take pictures, as well as because of noisy behavior. They leave behind a lot of garbage, often spit on the floor, and stand on the toilet seats with their feet. It happened, as the newspapers say, and theft of shoes from other passengers.
Information about special trains in the Chinese media was designated as “discrimination” and caused outrage. Journalists recalled that Chinese tourists “provide the economic boom of Switzerland.” However, there are reminders in the Chinese press about the recent warning that its citizens, traveling on holiday abroad, have made to the PRC tourist authorities concerned about their country’s image abroad. Tourists were warned that travel agencies, the media and the “general public” would monitor their behavior over the next two years. The Chinese authorities took such measures after a high-profile incident in 2013, when a Chinese student on the wall of a temple in Luxor scratched out hieroglyphs meaning his name.
Inflamed by anxiety and communications aviation authorities of China. 15 attempts to independently open the doors of the aircraft during takeoff or landing, as well as the case of arson, were recorded only in the first half of August, local media reported. And one passenger even tried to use the emergency exit during takeoff, “to take a breath of fresh air,” as he explained in court.
